Endometriosis

Endometriosis - some facts

  • Endometriosis is the condition when the lining inside of the uterus which is normally shed during periods (the endometrium), grows outside the uterus.
  • Common sites for endometriosis are the ovaries and uterus.
  • Typical problems caused by endometriosis include painful periods, pain during sex and infertility.
  • Women typically suffer the pain of endometriosis for over a decade prior to diagnosis!
  • Endometriosis affects about 1 in 12 reproductively aged women and so it is a relatively common problem.
  • The cost of managing endometriosis is estimated to be greater than that for asthma and migraine.
  • Although the pain from endometriosis tends to improve after menopause, there is no cure.
